The CHHS Wrestling team kicked off their 2010-11 campaign with an impressive 50-13 win over Jordan High School last night. Leading the way for the Tigers were the captains of the team, Ryan Mumper, Peter Dreher, Max Redfoot, Bobby Nelson and Matt Huge. All picked up pins on the night. Drew Copeland also picked up a pin in his Tiger debut.
The match started at 130 pounds where Tima Karginov bumped up to fill in for Micah who still needs a week to make weight. After two close periods, Tima took control of the match in the third period and used his three quarter nelson to score multiple sets of back points to pick up a major decision 12-3.
At 135 Junior captain Peter Dreher made quick work of his Falcon opponent in 1:14 of the first period. Peter has worked hard this off season and you can see the work paying off.
With the Tigers up 10-0, we headed into the 140 and 145 pound matches where a couple of sophomores were ready to make their mark on the team. Joe Carter at 140 pounds battled back an forth for three periods before giving up a 10-7 decision to the Junior Captain of the Jordan squad. With :16 seconds left in the match, Joe was down 8-7 and was looking to score the winning takedown when the Jordan wrestler countered. Ethan Martin followed up this performance with a tough 15-6 loss to the Senior captain of Team Jordan at 145 pounds. While Ethan struggled a bit getting his offence going, he did impress the crowd with his near spladle of the Falcon.
Heading into 152 we had a very tight match going. CHHS was leading 10-7, but had to bump up the 145 pound wrestler to cover for Roscoe Burnette who needed an extra day to make weight. Christ Mowandza was well on his way to win the match, leading 3-2 in the third period when a late turn by his Jordan opponent proved to be the difference in the match.
The 160 pound match featured returning State Runner up Max Redfoot. Max was not happy to see the score tied at 10-10 and took it out on his Falcon Foe. Needing just 73 seconds, Max picked up the second fastest pin on the night.
Bobby Nelson continued the momentum started by his fellow co captain and picked up a fall in the third period. After a tough battle through two periods, Bobby displayed his excellent conditioning and recorded the pin.
Senior Matt Huge showed he has more than good defense in his senior year. After scoring two takedowns in the first period, Matt used a great half to turn and pin his opponent in the second period.
The 215 pound match featured a scoring clinic by the young sophomore Alex Colson. Using explosive blast doubles, mean arm bars, and a great Pokki Roll, Alex came up one point short of the tech fall with a 15-1 major decision.
The fastest pin on the night came from the newest Tiger to hit the mat. Drew Copeland made his wrestling debut with an outstanding crunch and pin he learned from Coach Campbell a few weeks earlier. 54 seconds is all that it took for Drew to pick up the fall.
With starter Aaron Feinberg still working his weight down, young Joe Frederick was ready to pick up the battle at 103. With his team leading 38-10, Joe battled for three periods picking up a 11-8 decision and his first varsity win.
The 112 pound match featured a couple of freshmen from both teams. Stephen Dreher wrestled a very smart match en route to a 4-3 win over the Jordan power lifting champion.
Jordan was able to stop the Tiger ambush at 119 pounds with a 14-7 win over Nick Stefanadis. Nick wrestled tough and used all of his skill to prevent the major decision. This sophomore will be a big part of the future success of the Tigers.
The final match of the evening was the Ryan Mumper show at 125 pounds. The senior co captain used his patented mixer and whip to make light work of the Falcon wrestler in the first period. Ryan picked up the fall at the 1:33 mark of the match.
